Agnes Hunt - nurse

In 1900 Agnes opened ‘The Baschurch Home’, Florence House in Baschurch, as a convalescent home for 鈥榗rippled鈥 children. Here she extolled the benefits of open-air treatment.

“…humble beginning of the first open-air Orthopaedic Hospital of the world”.

Patients slept in open-fronted sheds in the grounds of the Baschurch Home. Even through the harshest of winters, the patients remained in the open-air sheds, tucked up with hot water bottles and layers of blankets.

鈥淭he hospital was primitive, extremely uncomfortable and supremely cheerful鈥.

By听1903 she had formed a partnership with Robert Jones, a renowned orthopaedic surgeon, based in Liverpool. 听Agnes Hunt and Robert Jones devoted their knowledge and skill, to the service of the 鈥榗rippled鈥 and led to the development of the听Orthopaedic Hospital, Oswestry.
